DropZone User Guide
DropZone is a Chrome extension that helps you quickly save files, links, and notes straight into Google Drive. No more switching tabs or digging through foldersβjust drop it, and it's there when you need it.
π Getting Started
Install in 3 Steps
- Add to Chrome β Get DropZone from the Chrome Web Store
- Pin It β Click the puzzle icon in Chrome and pin DropZone for one-click access.
- Sign In β Click the DropZone icon and sign in with your Google account.
First-Time Setup
When you first open DropZone:
- You'll see the sign-in screen.
- Choose to create a new DropZone or connect to an existing one.
- DropZone creates everything you need:
- A DropZone folder in Drive
- A subfolder for files
- A Google Sheet to log links and notes
- Once setup finishes, the main interface appears.
You're ready to start dropping.

1. Add Files to Drive in Seconds
- Click the DropZone icon to open the side panel.
- Drag a file from your computer or browser window.
- Watch it upload with real-time progress and appear instantly in your Drive.
DropZone supports all file typesβimages, PDFs, Word docs, Excel sheets, slides, videos, and more.
From your timeline you can preview, rename, open in Drive, or remove files.
Upload Features:
- Multiple files β Select or drag multiple files at once
- Progress tracking β See upload progress with file names and completion status
- Automatic organization β Files are saved to your DropZone folder in Drive
- Instant access β Files appear in the timeline immediately after upload
2. Save Links and Pages
- Paste or type a URL and hit Add. DropZone saves it with title and date.
- Paste an image link. DropZone will download the image when possible, or save the link if not.
- Want the page you're on? Click Capture Current Page to save it instantly.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides get special treatment: DropZone recognizes them and shows the right icons and details.
Smart URL Features:
- Automatic image detection β Image URLs are downloaded as files, not saved as links
- Metadata extraction β Page titles and descriptions are captured automatically
- Google Workspace integration β Special handling for Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- CORS fallback β If an image can't be downloaded, we save the direct link with a helpful message
3. Capture Quick Notes
Need to jot something down?
- Type your note and click Add Note.
- Notes are saved in your Google Sheet with a timestamp.
- You can edit notes later or search them in Drive.
Note Features:
- Content preview β See the first 2 lines of your note in the timeline
- Click to edit β Click any note to edit its content and title
- Automatic titles β Notes get auto-generated titles, but you can customize them
- Rich descriptions β Add detailed descriptions to provide context
Add descriptions to any file, link, or note to give yourself context for later.
4. Drag Images from Web Pages
DropZone can capture images directly from web pages:
- Drag from image sites β Drag images from Unsplash, Pexels, or any website directly into DropZone
- Automatic download β Images are downloaded and uploaded to Drive (not just saved as links)
- Smart detection β Recognizes image URLs and downloads them automatically when pasted
- CORS fallback β If an image can't be downloaded due to host restrictions, we save the direct link instead
How it works:
- Find an image on any website
- Drag it directly into the DropZone side panel
- DropZone extracts the image URL and downloads it
- The image is uploaded to your Google Drive as a file
- If download fails due to website restrictions, the direct image link is saved instead

- Edit any item β Click to edit titles, content, and descriptions
- Remove items β Hide items from timeline (data preserved in Drive/Sheets)
- Infinite scroll β Automatically loads more items as you scroll
- Smart icons β Different icons for files, notes, URLs, and Google Workspace items
The timeline shows your most recent drops first, with options to:
- View/Open β Open files in Drive or visit URLs
- Edit β Modify titles, content, and descriptions
- Remove β Hide items from timeline (with confirmation)

Common Issues & Solutions
- "Setup DropZone" appears β Click to create a new DropZone or connect to an existing one
- Images save as links instead of files β This happens when the host blocks downloads (CORS policy). The direct image link is saved instead
- Upload progress stuck β Refresh the extension or check your internet connection
- Timeline not loading β Sign out and back in to refresh your authentication
- Changes not saving β Check that you're connected to the internet and try again
- Can't connect to existing DropZone β Ensure the DropZone folder exists in your Drive and isn't in trash
Advanced Issues
- Authentication expired β Sign out and sign back in to refresh your tokens
- Cache issues β The extension automatically refreshes data, but you can sign out/in to force a refresh
- Permission errors β Check that DropZone still has access in your Google Account settings
- Side panel not opening β Try right-clicking the DropZone icon and selecting "Open side panel"
